Description
Original published in 1963 as a trade paperback The Velvet Underground was an expose on underground sex. “He might be the man next door, …she might be the woman who sits beside you in church“. This sexploitation title was successful enough to going into numerous printing and even a sequel.
Regardless, it’s almost only valued now for the inspiration for the band name. From what I recall , most of the members of the future Velvets were living or rehearsing at Tony Conrad’s apartment on Ludlow in NYC. A copy of this book was found outside in the street below and hence the band name. Or is that pure punk myth?
It was later issued in Britain in 1967 under as Bizarre Sex Underground. While, the UK edition lacks the famous title it retains the same cover artwork and judging by online prices is only marginally of less interest, albeit far scarer. From experience I’ve found that as long as it’s not the 1966 or 1968 printings customers don’t care, just as long as it predates the band’s formation.
