Description
Allegedly, on their first date together, Serge tried to impress Jane with the fact that he’d had a lyric book recently published a book of his lyrics….Chanson Cruelles, Published in April 1968 by Tchou Editeur (Bedside books),
Scarce, tiny book, 13cm x 7.5 (148 pages + blank pages at back ) is one in a series of poetry/lyric books by French songwriters & poets which also included Jean Cocteau, Jacques Dutronc, Boris Vain and Leo Ferret amongst many more. Whilst the many in the series could be found relatively easily, typically the Gainsbourg title is the hardest and most expensive. I ‘d either sell copies to French tourists, who could believe I had one, or dealers who then sold them for £375+
They were also issued in sets of up to 14 titles, with different bindings : the Gainsbourg title in either plain green or burgundy cloth with silver lettering. These are less attractive and sell for substantially less. The Burgundy originals, sometimes came in a generic gold box.
