Ella Shields was one of the most celebrated male impersonators. Born in Maryland USA in 1879, Ella began her career in Vaudeville in the US before she was lured to London in 1904, where she went onto rival Vesta Tilley as one of the most celebrated male impersonators on the Music Hall & Variety circuit until her retirement in 1929.
