Ella Shields was one of the most celebrated male impersonators. Born in Maryland USA in 1879, Ella began her career in Vaudeville in the US before she was lured to London in 1904, where she went onto rival Vesta Tilley as one of the most celebrated male impersonators on the Music Hall & Variety circuit until her retirement in 1929. She returned to the stage in 1952 , when she collapsed on stage and died 3 days later.
The publicity photo is probably from her her return to the stage in the early 1950s and is stamped on the reverse.
