Description
A scarce original poster for Bernard Pomerence’s play of John (Joeseph) Merrick’s life story, which previewed at the Hampstead Theatre In London on 3rd November (opened 7th), before transferring to the National Theatre. Further productions opened on Broadway in NYC in 1979, most notably with David Bowie in the role of Merrick…also Mark Hamill.
Although the screenplay for 1980 David Lynch film was supposedly based on the 1923 biography The Elephant Man and Other Reminiscences and the 1971 book The Elephant Man: A Study in Human Dignity, the Hampstead production was the start of renewed interest in Merrick within popular culture.
