Poetry at the Mermaid : Programme : July 1961 : Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin interest

£175.00

Despite appearances by many lead actors and poets of the day, including actors  Ralph Richardson,  Flora Robson and John Laurie ( best remembered for his film roles with Alfred Hitchcock and as Private Frazer in Dad’s Army) – this programme will be of most interest to Led Zeppelin collectors as it features one of the earliest  (if not the first) printed credit for a public performance by Jimmy Page.  Page aged 17,  provided “rock-poetry’ backing for poet Royston Ellis. Ellis had previously used The Shadows as his backing band and when travelled to Liverpool in June 1960, he tried to engage  a band called The Beatles as his backing band …..

Royston Ellis, This was after my stage and TV appearances with The Shadows, because they became so in demand, I had to find other musicians…I gave Jimmy Page his first stage and TV shows when he backed me reading my poetry…We did other shows together, too, in the 1960s…There was one to the HERETICS society of Cambridge University on 4th March 1961 and another at the Mermaid Theatre, London, on Sunday 23rd July 1961 which was just Jimmy and myself on stage as part of an evening of poets and actors reading works…”
