Description
Don’t let the dull grey title cover deceive you, this is a book of colourful book covers…In 1962, failed writers Joe Orton And Kenneth Halliwell were tried at Old Street Magistrate’s Court for defacing library books from Islington Library on Essex Road. Better than just defacing them they’d decorated their flat on Noel street with a collage made from the illustrations.
Their amazing embellishments to otherwise dull books weren’t appreciated and they were sentenced to six months for malicious damage. Those books are now amongst Islington’s most valuable books.
In 2013, Donlon Books achieved the impossible and managed to get permission from the original copyright holders of the defaced works and publish this book of the embellished covers .
