1966 Fuck Hate : Meat Poetry - Steve Richmond, Bukowski - one copy of the broadside in stock again

£10.00£250.00

The original ‘Fuck Hate’ slogan as a graphic appeared on the cover of #1 – the sole issue- of  Earth Rose in 1966. This was a  Meat Poetry poetry broadside published by Steve Richmond  that contains two poems Freedom & True Story by Charles Bukowski as well as poems by Steve Richmond and John Buckner.

Steve Richmond attended UCLA at the same time as Jim Morrison, lead singer of the Doors. According  to some accounts  his meat Poetry style influenced Morrison’s own poetry, and lyrics. In the mid sixties he was encouraged by Bukowski, already “king of small press poetry”. Richmond first published his work in the Wormwood Review  in 1964 (we have  1964 & 1966 copies in stock, both featuring Bukowski) .

1966 Photo of a wall In SF by Ben Van Meter, who filmed Kenneth Anger’s 1967 Autumn Equinox at the Straight Theater and made many other experimental films of his own,

Richmond  inherited $2 million, which allowed him to self publish and run the Earth Rose book shop in Santa Monica at 224 Ocean Park Blvd  LA.  The Earth series started in 1966 with Earth Books  Hitler Painted Roses : 300 copies, letterpress/ mimeographed 50 pages, stapled mimeographed . Another project being,  a now insanely rare, 1968 LP simply titled Poetry (100 pressed- Krumhansl’s Bukowski bibliography says  4 copies exist, another source 10).  It features  Richmond reading on one side and Bukowksi the other. The five Bukowski contributions were reissued on the 1977 2xLp  90 Minutes in Hell (Earth Records).

The Earth Rose was a one off broadside/ single sheet magazine (folded to into 4 pages -17″ x 11″). Despite a print run of 10,000 copies,  it didn’t make the 2nd issue. Distributed from the  Earth Books book shop, ten street sellers were arrested for distributing of an obscene publication, leading to Richmond’s arrest  and  seizure of  stock, including other Bukowski titles. The legal case took 4 years to conclude with an aquittal. All for obscenity.

Zappa, not a fan of censorship.

I’m (almost certain) that the Fuck Hate slogan began with the San Francisco Diggers, however I can’t find the photo again of a Digger brandishing a poster.  Regardless,  given the current world status quo, it seems a timely statement once again and the original magazine in the shop window received  a lot of attention from both Policemen and passers by. However since it rare item,  we’ve made a limited run of 25 T-shirts and cotton bags to make it more affordable and more available.

  1. The Earth Rose VG++ no rips  minor wrinkle along top edge ( see photo) last copy left Signed by Richmond, unfortunately signed Bukowski copy long sold.
  2. Fuck Hate T-shirt : Very limited stocks only 25 printed :£25 each + P&P
  3. Fuck Hate Bag: cotton, hand silk screened,  long handles £7.50 + P&P
