Description
Nabokov’s infamous novel was first published in Paris by the equally infamous Olympia Press.#6 in the Traveller’s Companion series which had the added bonus of having “Not to Be Sold in the U.K or USA” stamped on the back, due to backward obscenity laws, making titles like this and Burroughs’ Naked Lunch highly prized books at the time – providing they weren’t confiscated by customs officials ….While the 1955 two volume first printing (with the 900 francs price) has become increasingly expensive (£2,000-£8,000) the 1958 2nd impression remains affordable and pretty much resembles the first printing with the generic green Traveller’s Company cover. By the 1959 4th impression the title still remained in two volumes , the covers suddenly went in colour.Prior to the release of Kubrick 1962 film a film tie-in featuring Sue Lyon as Lolita was published in the UK by Corgi.
