Isle of Wight Festival 1969 : Bob Dylan comeback poster. +The Who, The Pretty Things, Family, The Band, Joe Cocker, The Bonzo Dog Do-Dah Band and The Moody Blues

SOLD

Search Isle of Wight for more ephemera from the 1968-1970 festivals.

Rare original official poster for the 2nd – two day Isle of Wight Festival, staged 29–31 August 1969. Organised by Fiery Creation:  Rikki Farr and  Ronnie and Ray Foulk.

The festival attendance was gauged at approximately 150,000 many to see Bob Dylan’s first live performance (including the Beatles) since his infamous 1965-66 tour. Dylan disappeared either to recover from an alleged motorcycle accident, or as  rumours persist to kick a heroin habit picked up on the gruelling tour….or both. Regardless, he was finally back on stage- exclusively -at the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival. The Beatles & partners all duly attended. However it wasn’t the return of the messiah everyone envisages.  Instead of the pop-star dark glasses, friz/’fro hairdo and the polka dot shirt, Dylan looked more like a southern preacher in a white suit and slicked back hair. Lennon tentatively returned to live performances in September, later using Dylan’s  flat “comeback” as justification for the Beatles not performing live again.  (Page216 Who Are the Plastic Ono Band:Pub 2020) : I saw what happened to Dylan (at IoW1969). He gave a reasonable performance. It was late and everybody had waited three days and it was slightly flat. There was nothing wrong with his performance and the audience appreciated it, but they expected Buddha or Jesus to appear. Also performing were The Band (Dylan’s band), The Who, The Pretty Things, Family, Joe Cocker, The Bonzo Dog Do-Dah Band, The Moody Blues, Third Ear Band ….

Condition : VG++ , minor damage top right corner. No pin holes and no other significant faults. Scarce in this condition.
