An Evening of British Rubbish 1963 John Sewell artwork flyer/ handbill : Bruce Lacey, The Alberts, Ivor Cutler

£45.00

This show ran at the Comedy Theatre in London for almost a year. Not only did it bring together the unique talents of Bruce Lacey, The Alberts, Ivor Cutler (all worth looking up if unfamiliar), but it had this brilliant poster / flier designed by John Sewell.

Although the programme  (with different Sewell artwork) is relatively common, the poster and flier aren’t. This is for the flier only , the only poster I’ve seen was  Bruce Lacey’s copy at his retrospective at The  Camden art centre 7 July 2012 – 16 September 2012.

Although there is no known connection, I’ve photographed it on the back of Jamie Reid’s 1977 artwork for Never Mind the Bollocks for obvious reasons.  It’s obvious how far ahead Sewell’s design was. Sewell  continued a prolific career as a book designer at Penguin, creating many great  covers (including Artaud!) but nothing IMO as seminal as this great piece.
