First edition of this groundbreaking work by Beat writer William Burroughs.
Published in Paris, France by Olympia Press in 1959 as #76 of the publisher’s Traveller’s Companion Series, this first edition copy has 1500 Francs printed on both the book and the calligraphic dust jacket designed by Burroughs (not Gysin) with no over stamps.
The first edition originates from Burroughs’ manuscript, hastily assembled over 10 days . It was published as The Naked Lunch instead of simply “Naked Lunch’. The US and UK editions originate from an earlier 1958 manuscript Ginsberg took to Lawrence Ferlinghetti for consideration, before being published in the US by Grove Press in 1962 and 1964 in the UK.
Condition : Dust jacket : The first copies lacked the jacket which was added “a month or so after” – but try selling one today without 🙂 Minor wear and chipping at the crown, otherwise no significant creasing or flaws beyond mild age related toning. One of the better examples I’ve seen. With the 1500 old francs price on the inside back flap. Any of the original printing of 5,000 copies not sold after 1st January 1960 over stamped (in purple) with the new 18 francs price.
Book: VG++ Light crease on front cover – see photos. Title page with the decorative border – lacking in the reprint. Old francs price on the back cover – not over stamped. and ‘Not to Be Sold in the U.S.A or U.K.’
