The Love Book by Lenore Kendal : 1966 1st Edition/ Printing ( banned book)

£175.00

On January 14, 1967 the Human Be-In was staged in  Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.  While it featured all the usual suspects from the counter culture movement, including Ginsberg & Leary, the only female contributor on stage was Lenore Kandel, who read from her infamous The Love Book. Although Kandel was a ‘known Beat’ ( featured as Romana Swartz  in Jack Kerouac’ Big Sur)  and contributed to underground titles such as Ed Sander’s mimeographed Fuck You ! magazine, she was INFAMOUS for her 1966  – The Love Book.  The 4 page pamphlet contained a 4 part poem “To Fuck with Love.”  Although copies were ceased from the Psychedelic Shop & City Lights as obscene literature and she was convicted by a jury for obscenity, Lenore won the appeal

The obscenity case boosted sales and the book was reprinted. The first edition is obviously scarce since copies were confiscated and presumably destroyed.

Condition : 1st edition & 1st printing : brown cover ( not black) with no blue over print and with publisher’s name on reverse of end paper but no address,  EX, very miniscule corner bump, virtually no other signs of handling.
