Description
UK 1st edition published by Maurice Girodias’ Olympia Press , when it relocated to Britain for short while. If you’re not aware of either, look them up. The Traveller’s Series was published in Paris and made available “DB’s – Dirty Books- by the likes of Burroughs, Troochi, Henry Miller etc that would otherwise be subject to draconian British and US censorship laws.
Anyway, Solanas’ infamous title, first self published in 1967 as a mimeographed edition of 2,000 copies. Her radical feminist manifesto went little noticed until she attempted to murder Warhol by shooting him at the Factory in 1968.
Girodias’s 1968 New York edition was the first to take the title ‘Scum’ and turn into in the acronym S.C.U.M = Society for Cutting Up Men , which Solanas objected to.
The UK first edition came out the year Solanas’ left prison for attempted murder.
Given the current wave against patriarchical, phallocentirc rule, Solanas’ title still has an audience beyond being a minor Warhol collectors item 🙂 ?!
