Obviously the handbill makes reference to the Merry Pranksters Acid Tests which took place all over California from December 1965 to October 1966.
The final two (proper) Acid Tests- (there were 2 further events using the title in 1967 & 68) were held in San Francisco in September and October, so, I’m assuming The Movie, a cinema on Geary was cashing in on the association. There was a free sugar cube on the door !- ?
Anyway, the main interest is the screening of Anger’s Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome ” Sacred Mushroom Edition” Revised and completed 1966.
The film footage was shot in 1954 after his return from Europe. This where Anger got serious and on what his reputation is founded. Shot on 16mm colour stock and running at 41 – 38 mins, it was truly an ambitious undertaking. An early version used music by visionary, outsider and composer Harry Partch and from 1958 it was projected onto three screens simultaneously. The new “psychedelic” version, subtitled Sacred Mushroom Version” was first shown at the 1966 Spring Equinox at the NYC Film Makers Cinematheque.
At the time of this screening Anger was living at the infamous Westerfeld House in SF, with Bobby Beausoleil and was in the process of starting one of his most celebrated yet hardest projects to complete : Lucifer Rising (1966 -to 1980).
The fact filming was a fluid, evolving process for Anger has often led to confusion by his collaborators, participants and patrons, who often found Anger’s process to somewhat baffling. Until he decided otherwise a film could be re-edited, new soundtracks add and even new scenes shot- years later.
