Ella Shields was one of the most celebrated male impersonators.  Although Born in Maryland, USA, in 1879, and starting her career in Vaudeville in the US, she was lured to London in 1904, where she  rivalled Vesta Tilley as one of the most celebrated male impersonators on the Music Hall & Variety circuit until her retirement in 1929. She returned to the stage in 1952 , when she collapsed on stage and died 3 days later.

These publicity photos probably date from her her return to the stage in the early 1950s and most are stamped on the reverse. One appears to be signed by her.
